The loader joystick on the L3130 here at work is stuck -- it seems frozen. It will move left-to right (to tilt the bucket) but we cannot get it to move up and down. The tractor sits outside and it has been cold for the past few days. Even when the tractor warms ups the problem does not go away.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

It is possible for there to be enough build up of moisture in the valve to do this. A common pipe heat tape, hair dryer, heat lamp, or most anything that might produce enough heat to thaw if that is the problem. Then remove the bottom cups off the valve, clean, nearly fill with grease and you should be fine. You can warm the tractor and the hydraulic fluid but unless the hotter oil can flow thru the valve it still won't be able to heat it. ....

Although it's not the absolute best method, it works, and it works fast.

Get the tractor warm, preferably by working the hydraulics enough to get the fluid warm, then cycle the circuit that does work back & forth for a few minutes. The warm hydraulic fluid running through the valve block will melt the ice.

Be sure to get rid of the moisture though, don't forget about it just because it starts working again.

A magnetic block heater on the back of the valve block or mounting pad will work too, but will take a while, especially if the wind is blowing.

Best of luck. ....

Kenneth, it is entirely possible... but... not very likely.

Since Oliver is in Mass. and he hasn't said anything about previous problems, I'm going on the basis it is frozen, that and I've had the same problem with my units over the years too, at least the open station ones anyways.

When something doesn't work people tend to stop, or not start, using it.

Unfortunately when you let a tractor run and get warm, it does boo all to make the hyd. fluid hot, or to circulate the fluid through the valve. That is what is needed, heat.

BTW, the ice usually NOT inside the hydraulic system itself, it is inside the housing of the loader valve, but external to the fluid galleries.

It develops when a the valve, hot from use, is left outside, particularly in snow, and allowed to cool, as it does so it melts the snow to a liquid, then as it further cools the moisture is sucked in by the vacuum caused by the air inside the valve cooling and condensing.

As Art has mentioned in previous posts, the solution, other than moving to Florida, is to fill the valves cavities with white lithium grease or something so there is nowhere for moisture to gather.

Best of luck.

Best of luck. ....

Murf, with the hurricanes and the tornado's add a few gator's and I'll take the northeast! Not to say I don't enjoy my better half taking me to warm country in Feb every year for a week, I just try not to let her know I like it to much. ....

Thanks for the insight. The maintenance guy will do his best to fix the problem tomorrow. One question -- how do you get at the cavity that needs to be filled with grease?
